Rae Dawn Chong, Celebrity Celebrant

Greetings, Gifted Reader.

lovely and loving, Rae Dawn Chong
If you’ve ever seen the blockbuster films Quest for Fire, Commando or The Color Purple, then you must remember the riveting performances of Rae Dawn Chong. She’s also appeared in numerous television shows including Melrose Place, Highlander and Judging Amy.

Aside from her stellar acting abilities, Rae Dawn is also an active spiritualist. That is, she believes so strongly in the celestial life, that she’s dedicated herself to launching a new television show about it. Recently, she raised enough money to shoot her pilot called The Celebrant.

As defined by Rae Dawn on her IndieGoGo page: “a celebrant is a person who serves the community by bringing ceremony and mindfulness and spirituality to everything in life. As a community, we help people heal through compassionate witnessing, and all of this is done in a way that encompasses all that is authentic and spiritual, and yet not attached to any one religious order. In fact, respecting all religion as sacred.”

Below, Rae Dawn shares with us her early life and expectations for the series:

Q: At what age did you develop an interest in metaphysics, and how?

A: 12 years old. The book was Ram Dass’ Be Here Now. I was in boarding school in Ojai, and it was a critical time for me.

Q: Can you briefly explain The Celebrant?

A:  In the pilot/series, I’m a Celebrant in New Hampshire who is on a self-imposed witness protection plan. I’m escaping a bad divorce, living quietly alone and struggling everyday to find meaning, GOD. Hence, my work helping people create ritual and spirituality, as a Celebrant. Ironically, I think people who do spiritual work are the ones most needing it. And my character in the pilot is definitely imperfect. I hope her search for meaning reflects a common search that we all have, or some of us have.  Personally, my entire life has been one journey looking for Divinity.

Q: What one message do you have for the world?

A: It is love. This is the very thing we all are looking for. Connection, meaning community, joy. To be witnessed, celebrated to celebrate, and grow. I reckon that is the thing that drives everything, including everything that is counter to love.

Thank you, Rae Dawn Chong for your words of enlightenment, encouragement and love.

And to our Gifted Readers, please remember to like our Urban Goddess fan page on Facebook, and check out our T_zing t-shirts, too.

Good luck, light and love,

Eclipsed!

Greetings, Gifted Reader.

Have you ever been eclipsed? Were you enjoying your moment in the spotlight when someone else came along and shone brighter than you?

In Astrology, eclipses play an important role in forecasting events. For instance, on May 9, an Annular Eclipse of the Sun will occur in the sign Taurus. Quoting Jim Maynard’s Celestial Guide 2013:

“An annular eclipse is when a narrow ring of the Sun is visible beyond the dark mask of the Moon.”

a couple of old time Seattle Astrologers
Astrologers believe the Sun rules our outer personalities—our egos and the side we show to the world; whereas, the Moon rules our inner more reflective selves. With the upcoming eclipse, it’s as if a sliver of Sun will attempt to bring light to a part of us that normally remains in a more contemplative area of life; revealing what’s been hiding in our subconscious. In actuality, though, it’s the Moon that’s coming between the Earth and Sun, and blocking illuminating rays with its veil. Does that mean that the Moon is trying to hide something the Sun is way too open about?

Here’s a standard definition of Solar Eclipse:

By the way, where is Taurus located in your Natal chart? That’s the area where the eclipse will affect you. For instance, since it will be transiting Gypsy Stars' 7th House of Partnerships, we wonder if she'll see the light about someone who's played a significant role in her life?

a lovely location to view an eclipse, powerful Sedona
Here’s a blurb about eclipses from Astrology.com’s Monthly Highlights:

>>AstroLesson: The Power of an Eclipse
Going back to ancient times, astrologers have carefully watched solar and lunar eclipses to see what we can learn from these visually dramatic events. And since a solar eclipse is set to occur in Taurus on May 9 -- right in the middle of the upcoming solar period -- now is an ideal time to discuss the impact of eclipses and how you can use them to your benefit!

Think of an eclipse as something that shines a massive spotlight on a specific area of your life, enabling you to clearly see what's going on. Solar eclipses invariably occur at a new Moon, a time of beginnings; lunar eclipses, meanwhile, always happen at a full Moon, a time of culmination when you get to stand back and gauge all your progress.

With any eclipse, you can always plan on something grabbing your attention. Just don't think too far ahead, for what you expect to happen often doesn't! (In fact, we use "eclipse" to say that one event overshadows another.)

Finally, be sure to not ignore whatever important information is revealed in the days immediately before and after an eclipse. May 9's Taurus eclipse sheds light on your finances, as well as your personal values, making it an apt time to take a good look at both.

If you know the area of your own chart where an eclipse is occurring, you can identify the area of your life that will be thrust into the spotlight -- and you'll be able to prepare accordingly!<<

Walking Backward With Mercury Retrograde

Greetings, Gifted Reader.

So, how’s that Mercury retrograde working for ya?

By now, even the average layperson is aware that when Mercury turns retrograde (slows its speed so as to appear as if it’s moving backward), havoc is wreaked. Or, is it?

two Seattle Astrologers discuss Mercury retrograde
For many of us, Mercury retrograde means revisiting the past. This is a period that can give us an opportunity to fix something we’ve left hanging. Also, note how many people you haven't heard from in decades who suddenly contact you on LinkedIn.

Astrologers know that Mercury rules communications and short-distance travel and when a retrograde occurs, it’s like a blast from the past. Issues we haven’t dealt with come back to haunt us--particularly areas that Mercury rules; like, the aforementioned communications and short-distance travel.

Did you misunderstand an email, letter, note or voicemail—something written or spoken? Or, did your travel plans go awry?

Gypsy Stars revisits her visit to St. John USVI
For those of us with Natal Mercury retrograde, there’s little to fear. We know that by walking backward through any life area, we get clarity. Many of us do that often, naturally, due to our Natal Mercury placement. Personally, Gypsy Stars likes to read backwards, and even watch a film from ending to beginning.

Mercury also rules siblings, neighbors and neighborhoods. Anyone up for a garage sale? This is a good time to get rid of stuff from your past. Maybe, even dump your evil sister.

The current Mercury retrograde period is February 19 to March 18. On the 20th, the Sun will move into Aries to give us a sense of renewal and hope for spring. It will be a great time to jumpstart something brand spanking new. With Venus joining the Sun on the 22nd, check out how closely your love and money sectors sync with your will and determination.

Remember, if you have an interesting metaphysical moment--or many of them--to share with us, drop us a line so we can feature you here. We’d love to let the world know about you and your work.

And, of course, check out our T_zing t-shirts at Cafe Press.

Until the Sun is in bright and beautiful Aries,

Good luck, light and love,

Comets Among The (Gypsy) Stars

a cosmic event takes place at Macy's T-day Parade

Greetings, Gifted Reader!

Excitement is in the air! Literally…

>>Hours after a meteor exploded over Russia and injured more than 1,000 people and an asteroid passed relatively close to Earth, residents in California reported seeing an unusual flash of light over the San Francisco Bay area that left many startled and thrilled.<<

Check it out:

What's your take on these cosmic events of late? Have they always existed and humans just not noticed them? If not, then why were certain civilizations like Maya, Hopi and Dogon of Dahomey hyper-aware of the light shows taking place in our skies?

Below are some observations from our favorite sky-watcher (and noted author), George Patton.

"This month Gypsy Stars will take a look at a different type of star that will be gracing our heavens in 2013. In the night sky beginning early March, we can witness the first of two Great Comets--Comet PANSTARRS--that should put on a rarely seen spectacular show. Called 'Broom Stars' by the pre-Christian era Chinese and Korean astronomers, comets (as unannounced interlopers into the relative order of the nighttime sky) were both feared and awed as the progenitors and prognosticators of powerful change. In modern times, we herald these frozen 'dirty snowballs' as a wonderful reminder of the infinite diversity within the heavens.

a different type of star
While Comet PANSTARRS promises to display a magnificent tail after rounding the Sun, the hallmark of Great Comets, it will still pale in comparison to the Great Comet of 1997--Hale-Bopp, which was not only the longest-lasting, at over eighteen months in the night sky, but one of the ten brightest ever recorded. Of course, PANSTARRS will be the warm-up for the expected return of Comet ISON, which (after rounding the Sun on November 28) should become bright enough to be one of only five comets visible in daylight. Unlike Comet Elenin, which was visible only to the Southern Hemisphere, Comet ISON will be visible at one time or another to the entire world."

A frequent contributor to Gypsy Stars on Facebook, George Patton claims to have discovered a periodic return pattern for this comet, which shares an orbital pattern similar to the Great Comet of 1680; the one which Sir Isaac Newton used to refine his mathematics of cometary revolutions, which was later proved by the return of Halley's Comet.

"Comet ISON should be named after Newton," said George in a recent interview. "Moreover, if Comet ISON is the first return of Newton's Comet 333 years later, we have a revolutionary period which we can track through time. So, looking backward, we also have a bright Sungrazing comet appearing in the fall in 1347 as in 1680 and 2013. Observers of the day called it Comet Negra and associated it with the spreading Black Plague of Europe (Bubonic Plague), which killed 25 million in Europe and 15 million in China. A further 333 years into antiquity, we find mention of a terrifying comet in 1014 as reported by Ellie Weisel (famed Nazi-Hunter) in his biography about a famed ancestor entitled Rashi."

"With the revolutionary period firmly established," continues George, “I began to check the timeline for reports of a spectacular long-tailed comet. As these were usually linked with dramatic historical events like the death of kings, they were not hard to find. I found one in 678 AD, three years earlier than expected (336 years) from British records. Then, one in 336 AD preceding the death of Roman Emperor Constantine, seven years early (340 years)."

The trouble, Mr. Patton notes, is the lax reporting standards of the historians of the day.

"They'll be like ‘this happened and, oh yeah, there was a comet about that time’ so they lump it all together," he explains.

But what’s the real mystery according to George?

they have no idea what's about to hit
"The timeline called for a comet appearance in 15 AD which was one year after the death of Augustus Caesar. Now, since the reign of Julius Caesar, Roman rulers were associated with comets. In fact, Augustus was the head of a comet cult centered around Caesar's Comet (44 BC), but there was no mention of one until you check the Chinese records for 5 BC. They reported a bright 'Broom Star' which began in the spring! Thus, adding another dimension to the Star of Bethlehem story."

Mr. Patton leaves us with one caveat regarding the reappearance of Long Period Comet ISON.

"The fact that the comet's orbit will bring it within 900 thousand miles of the Sun, well within the Sun's Corona, opens the possibility of a super Carrington Effect (circa 1859). That is, if the comet explodes when exposed to the extreme heat and gravity, an electro-magnetic pulse could be released. Now because of the proximity of the Earth at that time, our satellite network orbiting could be knocked off-line for months. Some scientists even postulate the possibility of a meteor shower based on the projected path of within 40 million miles, about the distance of Earth to Venus. In any event it should be an unforgettable show."

So, the expectations are high for an once-in-a-lifetime event. Could it fizzle out like Halley's Comet in 1986 or will it be spectacular enough to rival Comet Hale-Bopp in 1996-1997?  The answer, as always, is in the stars.

"After all," George reminds us, "Comets are the truest ‘Gypsy Stars’."

Until we meet again in our comet-filled cosmos,

Good luck, light and love,

Gypsy Stars

Age Of Aquarius; Or, The Month Of Anyway

star-tled!
Greetings, Gifted Reader!

Don’t be shocked, but the Sun entered Aquarius today. You know, that electrified sign that likes to astonish, stun and shock us?

A Fixed (Triplicity) Air (Quadriplicity) sign, Aquarius, is considered intellectual and a bit nerdy due to its absentmindedness. Often, those born with Sun in Aquarius are unusually good looking, which is ironic because they also tend to be rather asexual.

Still, Aquarians have a way of surprising us because of their contradictory nature. Like their ruling planet, Uranus, Aquarians never move in a linear, or predictable manner. Rather, they seem to thrive on being unconventional, rebellious and embracing that which is not of the status quo.

back to hippie?
Remember that little thing called the 1960’s? Remember the hippie movement back then? What was one of its national anthems? Perhaps that song sung by The Fifth Dimension…something about…this is the dawning of The Age of Aquarius.

When the moon is in the Seventh House
And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars
This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius

Okay, so the lyrics are referring to an entire Age, which it's still not clear exactly when that will begin. Each sign of the Zodiac rules about 2,000 years and there’s no consensus about when the Age of Pisces ends and Aquarius begins. But doesn’t that just reflect Pisces confusion and Aquarian unpredictability?

Read about it here. And, please watch the video for some great music:

Aquarians love meaningful graffiti
contradictory much?
But back to that 'peace and love' thing. See, Aquarius is supposed to be insightful with an intuitive sense for humanity. As much as these folks are individualists, they also tend to prefer relationships involving groups of people as opposed to those that are one-on-one. Like its symbol, the Water Bearer--a man pouring water to the masses from a large jug slung across his shoulders, Aquarians are inspired to assist large, anonymous crowds rather than a single familiar face. After all, Aquarians are sometimes commitment phobic in their quest for personal freedom—which also contradicts their need to be of service to others.

By default, Aquarius rules the 11th House of Friendship, Social Groups, Wishes, Hopes and Dreams. Whatever sign and planets fall there determines the way you deal with those areas of your life.

sculpture for The Aquarian Age
And, where is Aquarius in your chart? That’s where you are the most independent. Is it on the Cusp of your Fifth House? Then, you could be more of a friend than parent to your child. Or, maybe you like to have unusual love affairs. Aquarians can be kinky, too, as they love to experiment with the unusual. Anyone for a threesome?

The planet Uranus has an 84-year cycle through the 12 signs. Therefore, when you reach the age of 42, it’s exactly opposite of where it was in your Natal chart when you were born. That's what we in the West refer to as the “midlife crisis”. In an effort to recapture our youth, many of us behave suddenly and unexpectedly in our 42nd year--especially males with money who often purchase red sports cars and begin dating 20 year-olds. When Transiting Uranus opposes your Natal Uranus, it triggers planets that form aspects to that House. Just check it out if you’ve already passed that age to see how you behaved during your Uranian opposition.

Meanwhile, welcome to the Sun in Aquarius until February 18.

Is This The End?!?

6 days and counting!
Greetings, Gifted Reader!

Don’t look now, but we’re just 6 measly days away from the end of the world. That is, if you believe that 12-21-2012 will signal the termination of life on Earth as we know it. Whether you think that human consciousness will ascend to the next level, or think it’s all just a bunch of ‘stuff’, one thing we can all agree on is that Winter Solstice takes place on 12-21.

What exactly does Winter Solstice mean anyway? Here’s a quick explanation.

And, here's more about 12-21-2012 from an Astronomer.

those clever Maya built this
While Gypsy Stars has many thoughts about what will happen on 12-21-2012, my understanding is that Earth aligns with a portal to the Milky Way every 26,000 years and that day will be December 21. For whatever reasons, those clever Maya knew that. Think about it. They would have had to live through at least two 26,000-year cycles to prove their theory.

However, if you’re reading this after December 21, we can surmise that a lot of folks have misinterpreted that Maya Long Calendar.

distinguished Seattle Astrologers: David, Jim and Dave
As for Astrology, the Sun moves into Capricorn on December 21 this year. A sign that concerns itself with status and reputation, Capricorn has rulership over government. It likes structure. Capricorn also rules the 10th House of career along with the 10th House parent, which is generally the father. With Saturn as its ruling planet, Capricorn is the quintessential stern dad teaching his child through rigorous discipline.

Pay close attention to Saturn right now since it entered Scorpio on October 6. Where is it transiting in your Natal or Progressed charts? Are you experiencing loss, or harsh lessons, in that area of your life?

Last Thursday, Uranus went stationary direct in Aries, and we experienced some shocking news especially involving violence (Mars rules Aries, the sign of the warrior). But on the positive side, this is a good time to begin a new enterprise that involves something unusual and downright freaky thanks to Uranus’ attraction to the weird.

Until 2013, if we make it there, folks…

Season Of Celebration During A Time Of Departure

Greetings, Gifted Reader!

Yes, Gypsy Stars is late (again!) in posting this blog, but it’s that crazy time of year. You know, this is the period when those of us in North America celebrate a plethora of holidays. Beginning with Halloween (or All Hallows Eve, or Day of the Dead) to Thanksgiving to Hanukkah to Christmas to Kwanzaa to New Year’s (not just on January 1, but beyond with all the various Asian New Years), most of us find ourselves hustling and bustling in an effort to party.

Persian cat...meow
Gypsy Stars would like to know exactly what holidays you participate in and, more importantly, why?

Did you do Halloween this year? Did you wear a costume or go trickin' for treats like me? Meow.

And what are your plans for Thanksgiving, or as some label it—a national day of mourning for the First Peoples, or the Indigenous, of this mainland? Read about how Thanksgiving is celebrated in other countries, including Grenada and Japan:

Christmas pine
Soon, it will be Christmas and yet another new year. Are you ready for a rebirth or renewal of spirit at this cold and bleak time? Or, does celebrating a new year in the dead of winter, on January 1, not make sense to you?

Wouldn’t you feel more renewed in early spring when the Sun moves into Aries, the beginning of the Zodiac, and blooming flowers?

Spring roses
What is it about fall and death, anyway? Gypsy Stars recently lost a very close friend and re-examined this time of year. While leaves end their cycles by falling from trees and leaving bare branches behind, other wonders of Nature also hibernate during this season. It's no coincidence that fall coincides with the Astrological sign Scorpio and the Eighth House—the ruler of death and regeneration. No wonder we celebrate so much during this time when heavy thoughts and feelings threaten to permeate our souls.
